So What You Got An Afro Under Your Armpits

You know what I'd like to know? I'd like to know who in the hell made up the rule about women shaving under their armpits. Who made up that rule? Who was the person that first did it, and signed it into law. Was it the same person who decided that shaving the pubic area, and giving it the Kojak look was the way to go? Seriously, I'd really like to know. Personally, I think the only reason to "go bald" is if you have a receding hairline like Wayne Brady. But err, it's not like anyone sees under your arms, nor your pubes.

Chances are, most of the women reading this will say that the woman in the clip above is nasty for not shaving under her arms. I'm pretty sure some of the guys will feel the same way as well. Interestingly though, none of the men will ever admit to not having sex with a woman because she was too hairy. For real though, what man do you know would turn down an opportunity to have sex with a woman because he found Dr. J's fro under her arms. I know I wouldn't.

And speaking of too hairy: if its nasty and unattractive for a woman not to shave, how many women would be accepting of a man choosing to shave his pubes or keep his pubic area completely shaven? Ok, so I'm not a woman, but if I were, having sex or seeing a man look like an 8yr old with a very big penis would be a turnoff? Dammit, you're supposed to have hair down there. Personally, I find the woman in the clip above attractive. But hey, that's just me. Yes, I have a thing for hairy women. Now, when you're talking about the hair on her legs poking out of a pair of tube socks, umm, that's a little too much.

Apparently some of the people who saw the video above felt the need to comment and contact this woman (on YouTube) with their displeasure. In the next clip she justifies why she doesn't shave. You know what? I'm kinda feeling her in her response. It has to be liberating to do or go against societal standards of beauty. You know, kinda like the Afro being a symbol of rebellion or Black Power back in the day? The only thing that bugs me about her is that she has this long ass weave on her head and her underarms are unshaven. I mean, I could be wrong, but if you have an afro under your arms, why in the world do you have a weave?

So do women shave because, well, some guy said it was nasty? Or do they shave because some woman decided that it was what's best? Somebody lemme know please. Because if there really is no medical benefit to shaving your armpits and pubic area, isn't it, well, kinda dumb? You know, kinda sorta like buying clothes for your pets? India Arie had a song a while back where she said "I am not my hair." Women, Black women in particular took to this as a song of female empowerment. I thought it as pretty cool at the time. But did they ever stop to think of which hair the woman was singing about?

  1. Hey RIPPa,
Hair retains Funk! Now if a Woman is gracious enough to let a Brotha taste her Funk in the Holy of Holies then I like that placed shaved and well groomed because one even though it's supposed to be funky, hair in your throat can be and is Nastee and not in a good way dig?

  2. @Jaycee: I hear you on the funk thing. But I think if fuck was a problem, God would have given us all the ability to have that Kojak Crotch as we matured naturally. Obviously God doesn't think we stink too badly. But then again, maybe that's another one of his practical jokes like midgets and shit like that.

  3. Uh, I agree with MrJaycee..hair retains funk..lol

I don't know what smells worst her armpits, or her funky hair weave!

I guess she can't grow it on her head, so why not let it grow elsewhere.

  5. Hey Ripp,
The only reason I shave under my arms is because when the weather starts getting warm, my armpits will start smelling like them middle eastern people whom are very generous with the curry powder... AND I KNOW YOU MUST KNOW WHAT THAT SMELLS LIKE!
As for ole girl in the video, to each his/her own. Just don't kill me with your body odor. At least have the common courtesy to not do that to anybody.

  6. I shave the various areas on my body because the hair absorbs sweat and the sweat smells bad to me. Also you can feel more down below during those special times if you keep it trimmed or shaved.

But I don't have a problem with people keeping their stuff longer as long as they don't stink.

  7. It seems that everyone hating on the Funk is the common answer.

But it's also seen as being more urbane and modern and less urban and country.

  8. Now I don't understand the "funk" being an issue. Seriously, men have been going around for ages with much underarm hair and I have yet to see it as a major problem.

I think people just don't wanna be honest and admit that its seen as uncivilized.

    lol

  9. And men have been seriously funky for ages. The men I have met who shave their pit hair and at least trim their pub hair smell much better - especially on hot days.

    Funk is the main issue.

I believe due to the funk, it is seen as uncivilized.

  10. Since funk is the main issue...

    check this out:

Underarm Hair (also called axillary hair or armpit hair) is the composition of hair in the underarm area. This hair, as most of the other body hair, normally starts to appear at puberty and growth is usually complete by the end of teen age. The release of pheromones from the axilla at this stage of human development suggests association of armpit hair with sexuality. The positive response to olfactory stimulus in mammals and the consequent intensification of the sex drive caused by release of pheromones offers useful clues as to the purpose and importance of axillary hair in humans. It has been suggested that the hair itself acts with a natural "anti-friction" quality between the upper arm and the thorax. More importantly, armpit hair naturally wicks moisture away from the skin, which aids in keeping the skin dry enough to prevent colonization by odor producing bacteria.

It is a commonly believed myth that shaving hair will cause it to grow thicker over time.[2] There is nothing about the practice of shaving that produces new follicles for hair to grow out of; this myth most likely persists because stubble does not taper like hair that is allowed to grow long and because short hairs feel coarser than longer hairs of the same thickness. However, shaving does increase the likelihood of developing ingrown hairs. Armpit hair removal must be performed more frequently than leg shaving, as underarm hair grows faster than leg hair, and if not done consistently, stubble can appear. The armpit area can darken over a period of time and even with a close shave, a "5 o'clock shadow" may be visible. Because hair under the skin can contribute to a dark appearance of the underarm, waxing, by removing the hair from the root, can effectively reduce this darkness.[3] However, removing armpit hair, whether by shaving or any other method, increases the amount of moisture allowed to cling to the skin and if combined with a disturbed acid mantle caused by the use of most soaps (basic pH), may lead to increased body odor.

My tyhing is: its not the hair that produces the funk, its the people who don't properly wash their ass in a timely manner (LOL).

  11. LOL RiPPa -- there are a lot of people who don't know how to/don't take care of their funk.

I also find it disgusting when people have chunks of deodorant stuck in their pit hair. That stuff is not getting to the skin where it needs to be effective and those spider egg-looking clumps are very unappealing.

  12. No you didn't say spider egg looking clumps...

    Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Ok, I ain't gonna lie, I guess a woman with dread locks under her armpits would be kinda disturbing.

  13. Now, I'm sorry, I truly think that mess is nasty. I think it's truly a personal preference. That is an odor absorber. Hair is designed to catch sweat droplets and if it catches it....it stays there which means the shit stinks. She kinda pissed me off flinging that Chinese womans hair around like she grew it...that shit was silky straight, why was her pit hair in kinky twists? If she lets hair grow where it wants to grow, I guess the hair on her head was on strike, huh? Shave that shit!

  14. LMAO@the hair on her head being on strike! I know thats real. Like I said in the blog, that was the only thing that kinda bugged me about the clip.

  15. I have to agree with PoetryK, its a personal preference. I feel alot better when I shave, thats just me. I don't need my pit hair fluttering in the wind, I'm just saying. Whatever tickles your pickle I guess. Just like Monique's hairy legs bug the hell outta of me, but if you ask my friend and he will tell that is sexy.

  16. Wait? Monique has hairy legs?? Oh I'm in love with her more now because of that.

    LOL

  17. Nah. The armpit hair thing is purely cultural. Hair, generally, is very culture- (and time-) specific--the idea that there is hair on some parts of the body that is "good" and on other parts, "bad" and the idea that this varies by sex.

Part of the no-underarm-hair-on-women thing is pretty creepy: the desire to create in women a more youthful, pre-pubescent vibe that for many men is a turn-on. (Similarly with shaven pubic areas.)

The more general taboo against more hairiness in both men and women is probably linked to our desire to differentiate ourselves from our primate relatives.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @ postpostracial -- Interesting point about the differentiation between ourselves and primates. I hadn't thought of that, but it makes sense. That is why that young kid somewhere in Mexico(?) gets paid a lot for having hair on every inch of his body -- he looks extremely ape-like and is in a circus for it.

  19. Dang, I never thought of the anti-primate connection. It is indeed an interesting concept or thought. There just might be some validity to it as well. Makes me think of the lady who was having sex with that crazy monkey that the cops had to shoot recently.

  22. I remember reading an article saying when the idea for women to be shaven was introduced and basically it was a result of razor sales. This company needed to boost sales and they wanted to market towards women (i guess) and they started introducing images of women being shaven (legs and underarms) where there weren't any problems or complaints before. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with our biological design. (everything serves a purpose) It all boils down to culture, personal preference, or what is seen as being aesthetically pleasing to that individual. Where there is hair there or not the sweat isn't going anywhere and neither is the odor producing bacteria. Knowing how to take care of yourself, by which I mean showering at least twice a day and using products that inhibit the growth of the odor producing bacteria instead of using products that only mask it, is a large part of it. Then your 'natural scent' comes through. This scent is also key in attracting mates. I also remember seeing a study which basically said our individual scent was one of nature's way of letting us know who to mate with and lower the possibility of incest and increase the diversity of genes (something like that) etc. The masking of scents with commercial products, people could be messing with their blood and not even know it producing genetic problems in the future. Basically the study had females/males smell different tubes of sweat where females/males actually found themselves attracted to (they found some nice smelling/appealing). Those scent/sweat they found repulsive were family members. etc. I think it was like on the discovery or health channel something like that. I think they were discussing everything that makes males/females attractive to one another and how they find potential mates based on voice, smell, facial/body symmetry, etc.

I think what puts people off of it is how it looks. (BTW this does not mean that I don't shave. I personally don't see anything wrong with it)
