In Prescott, Ariz., a new mural at Miller Valley Elementary School has caused an uproar. The mural shows a group of children of several races using "green" transportation methods. It appears to have struck a nerve among some Prescott residents.
The controversy started when comments made by Prescott City Councilman Steve Blair aired on his KYCA radio talk regarding the mural. On May 21, Blair said, "I am not a racist individual, but I will tell you depicting a black guy in the middle of that mural, based upon who's president of the United States today and based upon the history of this community when I grew up, we had four black families — who I have been very good friends with for years — to depict the biggest picture on that building as a black person, I would have to ask the question, 'Why?'"
Blair also admits that "whenever people start talking about diversity, it's a word [I] can't stand."
Oh, Arizona... It's like your stuck in your own version of the Middle Ages. The only problem is, this is 2010. With access to the internet, rapid globalization and easy access to so many different cultures and races of people, there's no excuse. I mean, it's like your intentionally saying, "Yeah, we're a bunch of idiots. But we don't care! We want to have our own thing anyway!"
Many would argue that's what the damned problem is. Arizona does NOT have enough diversity, and that's why this is an issue. And let me tell you, that being overrun by Central Americans, mostly Mexican, does not a diverse state make. If the population in Prescott for black folks is less than half a percent, then the mural with the black child would be a perfect opportunity to EDUCATE.

You know for the last few weeks I've been really irritated everytime that damned "Catholics come home" commercial comes on. You know the one where these folks talk about how all of a sudden they went from non-practicing to practicing Catholics and how enriched they are spiritually now that they are back.
It irritates me because it's almost condescending considering the pickle the Catholic church and the Pope have found themselves in again.
And you would think there would be some humility, some understanding, some empathy given the news that over 200 boys were molested across the globe in addition to previous cases.
Instead the Church's pitbulls are out in full effect; ego in full effect. *In best Cartman voice* "Whatevah! Ah do what ah want!"
The Vatican has taken off the gloves in its response to media reports alleging the pope mishandled a series of abuse cases before he was elected.
It launched a frontal attack on the New York Times on Wednesday night by posting a long statement on its Web Site by Cardinal William J. Levada, who succeeded the pope as head of the Vatican's doctrinal department.
Levada asked the newspaper "to reconsider its attack mode about Pope Benedict XVI and give the world a more balanced view of a leader it can and should count on".
The Vatican has denied any cover-up over the abuse of 200 deaf boys in the United States by Reverend Lawrence Murphy from 1950 to 1974. The New York Times reported the Vatican and Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict, were warned about Murphy but he was not defrocked. (Source)
They also argue that because the Pope is a head of state, he cannot be put on the stand to testify. They are not a "multi-national corporation."
Are they afraid that maybe he'll show his ignorance and complete and total disregard the way he did when he said Africans didn't need condoms (despite the high HIV and AIDS rates on the continent, and the rapes that occur in places like the Congo?)
Isn't this the same guy that was tied to Nazis in World War II?
Can we REALLY expect this man to show any type of care given his track record for really not giving a damn? What did we expect now? Humility?
This is not an attack on the foot soldier in the Church, because some of them are truly out-of-the-box thinkers, and they don't always follow the Church's outdate, self-righteous, morally condescening and out of touch doctrines. I guess I just want to know how much longer before the world as a whole decides to DEMAND that they get their shit together?
I think anyone and everyone who willingly participated in these cover ups and abuses of innocent children should be arrested and tried. If that means the Pope, so be it. He is just a man, and God sees him the same way he sees you or me. The Pope is simply a vessel. If he fails at his task, he should be punished the same way we would be. Period.

So by now I'm sure everyone has seen the infamous Oakland bus beatdown caught on tape recently. I ran this story several days ago, and I've probably watched the video at least 50 times. I've watched it over and over because, well, there's something funny about seeing a 67yr old white guy who looks like "Papa Smurf" catch wreck at the expense of the reputation of of a young brotha on a bus! And doing it so well so as to produce the line of the week, "Bring the Ambalamps." Well, the Heavy Weight Bus Boxing Champion of the World has been identified as Thomas Bruso, and he has a lot to say:
Yeah I realize that's kinda hard for a black guy to pull off. Unlike white people, black folks don't really care when they receive shitty customer service. Nine times out of ten black people are either providing said shitty service, or as a customer trying to get the hook up from said shitty service provider. So what somebody may have died somewhere else because they weren't able to get through to a 911 operator - they probably didn't have health insurance anyway. Well, he appeared on Jay Leno and, apologized last night? Did you see how the audience cheered for him before and after the interview? Clearly these were not the same people who were on twitter the last few days as Renee at Womanist Musing shared [Read it here]. Everybody is talking about him getting help as if he's hooked on crack or something. Sorry, but the only drug Kanye Kinte has been hooked on is fame and celebrity stardom. Though I can understand the loss of his mother weighing heavy on his heart and maybe, being used as an explanation for his behavior as explained over at The Sable Verity. His mother's death is no excuse for his actions the other night.
So no, I'm not buying the "take some time off" crap like he needs to go into some rehab clinic or run to Africa like Dave Chappelle. I'll be honest, I haven't paid much attention to Glenn Beck and his 9/12ers who protested this past weekend. I'm sorry, but I wasn't in the mood for all that "white noise". But after speaking with Mrs. Genma Holmes of the blog Genmaspeaks yesterday on the phone, and finding out that Glenn Beck didn't even attend his Million Moron March (I didn't know there were that many of them), I became a bit interested. Genma read to me a most excellent piece she wrote about the 9/12 clowns (read it here), and the hypocrisy of "their" patriotism as compared to one day removed from the tragedy that occured on September 11th 2001. Never one to lump or label people into categories [insert maniacal giggle here], I decided to see just what was up with these fine Americans.

You know, sometimes I hate my own blog. Seriously, sometimes I hate to even put my fingers to work bringing to light some of the most ignorant shit I come across everyday. But even so I welcome the stuff that my readers send me via email to comment on. Not that there's a shortage of positive stories to promote. In truth I save those for myself and instead, share with you folks a daily dose of dreadful reality known as the human condition. With that said, can any of you tell me what the hell is a 15yr old and a 17yr old doing working in a strip club?
I mean every time I've ever entered a strip club I've been carded, and I'd like to think that they do the same for job applicants. But last week in a surprise raid down in good old Florida by authorities, two teenage girls were found employed by the establishment known as Playmates. What, do we need the Department of Homeland Security doing employment verification as they do with undocumented workers at strip clubs now?
When I read the story I was dumbfounded to find out that the mother of one of these girls never knew that her daughter was sneaking out at night to go to work on a crotch infested pole. But then I read where they said the 15yr old, who has been working there for a few months hasn't been to school since the 7th grade. Listen, I have two teenage daughters, one 16 and the other 15. Um, I'd like to think that my wife and I would be aware of the fact that one of them hasn't been to school in a few years. Yes, not skip a day or two, but rather a few years.
Hello! No wonder this kid is able to do something like she does every night. Don't get me wrong, I've done my share of sneaking out of the house in my day. But c'mon man; sneaking out every night for several months? Look, this is bullshit, and I blame the parent(s) more than I do the child. I mean, if young teenage young men are brave enough to take penitentiary chances by selling drugs as they do. What's to stop a 15yr old who is not oblivious to the fact that sex sells? I'm just saying, whether it's for attention that young girls receive by posting those booty poppin' videos on the internet (like the one above; did you notice the banner advertisement?), or the money. There is no way of escaping the attraction unless you have proper parental supervision.
Like you, I'd like to know or hear the thoughts of the parents of these girls. I guess the local news in that city did as well and hence this following report in the video below. When the news crew showed up at the home to speak with the Rosemary Lumpkin, the mother of the 15yr old they were met by a not so friendly grandmother of little miss 15yr old hot pants. Maybe I'm wrong, but the fact that granny attacked the news crew with a garden tool is telling about her gran-daughter. I'm sorry, the story about these girls is no laughing matter. But thankfully, ole granny was able to entertain me even as disturbing as this story was:

Here's what I got out of her farewell speech the other week. Of course people are all talking about how incoherent her speech was (as if she's ever been coherent) and the ambiguity of her reason for stepping down. Just when you thought the infant mortality rate was high enough for Black babies, in steps Genine Compton. Just in case you haven't heard of this woman just yet. She was recently ticketed for child endangerment. You see, Genine thought it was a good idea to breast feed her child while driving. Talk about multitasking, right?
Not only did she find it convenient to pop out a titty for her starving malnourished child - she said that her child was hungry and she wasn't going to dare to deny her child food - she was also talking on her cell phone. Now, I sincerely hope this woman was using one of those Blue Tooth headsets. Its bad enough that the baby had to suffer the ordeal of being fed while she's driving and endangering the welfare of said child. But its another thing that she was also using her cell phone.
What destination was so important that this woman could not take the time to stop and feed her child, if the child was in need of a meal? What person on the other end of a phone call was that important at that time? Thank the lord that it was due to the concern of a fellow driver that this woman was caught. You see, it was through the actions of another driver that the police got involved. After the phone call of another motorist was this woman tracked down through license plate information.
I saw this story on CNN Headline News yesterday, and I was shocked that this woman, even with a camera in her face, declare that she did what she thought was right. I promise you, I wanted to chop her in the throat. According to officials, she she faces up to 180 days in jail and a $1,800 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor. As an advocate for breastfeeding, I applaud any woman who takes it upon herself to breast feed in public. But to do so while driving? Well, you could imagine how I feel. I'm just kinda ticked off that this is only a misdemeanor and not a felony.
As I driver, I've seen people do some of the dumbest things while driving. Anything from reading the newspaper, putting on makeup, to even an act of fellatio. Yes, fellatio; I've seen it. All of which are a danger to not only themselves, but to other drivers. But what this woman did, takes the cake in my book. The real tragedy here is that it involved the life of a child. Personally, when it comes to children, I think we must do better.
