Kreayshawn: Jim Crow, Black Women, and Boundaries

Last week, buzz surrouding a white female rapper named Kreayshawn and her signing by Sony was all over the blogosphere. Some people were all for her, and others were underestandably displeased.

The Crunk Feminist Collective dissected Kreayshawn in a very well-written piece that resonated with me on so many levels:

The White Girl Mob media darling blowing up the interwebs whose potential deal with Sony is making waves makes me angry in a way I haven’t been in a long time. Her appropriative swag is yet another reminder (not that we needed any more this month) of how little black women are valued in our society, even in genres we co-create. In a moment where cool is synonymous with swag, a particular manifestation of black masculinity, Kreayshawn’s dismissiveness and denigration of black women animate her success.

However, The Clutch really got to the heart of my issue with Kreayshawn and her general persona:

It’s ironic how the White girl mimicking Black culture has been viewed as quirky, cute, and interesting in the past. But sisters who fashionably rock bamboo earrings, gold nameplate necklaces, and blonde streaked weaves, will inevitably be considered “ghetto” by society. It’s equally problematic that every female emcee post Queen Latifah and MC Lyte who has had massive mainstream success all had to sell sex. Kreayshawn, on the other hand, is able to avoid an over sexualized image because of her whiteness.

That is my problem with her, aside from the fact that her music is garbage, overplayed and overly hyped up. She is able to build buzz and make a name for herself because she's a modern day version of Jim Crow.

White Ain't Right...Or Is It?

Isn't it funny how a group that has essentially taken the rhetoric of the Black Panther Party is now totally blinded by the fact their white privilege is operating as they re-color history again?

Are white's racially oppressed? Is that really a question? Do you have any understanding of what oppression is? Oppression is a state of feeling powerless. I'm confused how anyone benefitting from white privilege, in a white supremacist society, can feel powerless?

CNN's article highlights the fears of the Tea Party members, as well as "a large percentage" of whites, that they are becoming the newest racial minority. First, how do you become the "new" racial minority when you are the original racial establishment that set the standard for racial oppression in this country? Secondly, isn't racism and ignorance rooted in fear? So basically, at the root of all your worries they're operating from a place of fear. This type of thinking is the same logic for anti-miscegenation laws-white people will become the minority.

The sad reality is that we have the white right arguing how they are the minority as they benefit from all the privileges their white skins affords like walking down the street without being questioned, driving without being stopped, not going through rigorous series of application processes for jobs, scholarships, education, etc. and being able to visit Arizona. Then on the white left you have people arguing race doesn't matter any more, let's just stop talking about it. So white ain't right, it's everywhere.

White supremacy is rooted in our (in)justice system, our schools, media, relationships. Hell, it's the foundation of our country. Oppression is all about power. I'm really disturbed at how the racial group with all the power wants to cry about how they're losing some. In Rock My Soul: Black People and Self-Esteem, Black feminist scholar bell hooks' chapter "Refusing To Be a Victim" discusses why people use victimization as a tactic. She argues how playing the victim makes us "far more likely to receive attention and handouts." In her book Killing Rage: Ending Racism, she has a chapter with the same title: "Refusing To Be a Victim: Accountability and Responsibility". She talks about how some white women played the victim in feminist labor movements, gaining acceptance into the workplace before both Black men and women. Some of this acceptance was also at the hands of exploiting Black folks.

So you see, white people playing the victim is not a new trope in American society. We do this every time we get scared we're going to lose a little bit of our privilege. Any time we see a few people of color beginning to garner white supremacist notions of success, we start to worry. After all, fear is what consumes this country.

As white people continue thinking they are racially oppressed, I hope they recognize how this is all an exercise in their own white privilege. Getting buses, people, resources, etc. together and mobilizing in the nation's capital takes some type of social capital. All of that takes money, time, etc. The reason we haven't seen a movement as great as the March on Washington is because people are afraid. People don't want to sacrifice their time and sometimes can't because they have to work. You can find white people in every power-holding vector of society. Can you say that same for people of color?

White privilege is not only having white skin. It is benefitting from or reinforcing the white supremacist ideals that founded this nation--ideals that endorsed racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, ableism, etc. It is having enough ignorance to be able to skip over the realities of this country without paying full attention to the context in which you're speaking. Is white right? No, white is left too. And from the looks of it, some white ain't right...in the head.

White Power White Privilege

Every time someone challenges society by pointing out white privilege, gender privilege, cultural privilege or any other accepted hierarchy within privilege classes this tends to provoke anger from the privileged class. There is a reactionary attack against the messenger and anger to these cultural disparities being brought up. Some claim it is an attack on whites, others claim to point it out is an attack on their culture, religion or the patriarchy of some sort..

This should be of no surprise. The group who has the privilege will not wish to see that there may be oppression that has granted this privilege. To gain this superiority one must marginalize another thus this marginalization and oppression will flare up. Questioning the hierarchy within this will result in what brought it about. The privileged will justify their privilege often through the re-victimization of the oppressed. They will place the blame on the oppressed for being oppressed. It is true that many libertarians fall in with this category..

Normality is relative. Culture tends to create a egocentric perspective of the world that distorts perception of other cultures and people. To claim there is a norm is often to cling to the culture one has been raised in and conditioned to accept as the norm. The good clean christian white suburbia is often a place we see this..

If you drive to the suburbs of just about any U.S. city you can begin to see it. If you are living in a suburb you may have to leave the suburb to see how others live. In the suburban world we see many areas of privilege. The state subsidized sprawl in catering to the upper class and an upper middle class. With the social subsidies many of these people never challenge despite their rhetoric against the social subsidies for other cultural groups. They tend to attack things like taxation only when it benefits someone outside of their norm..

White Privilege and the "War on Drugs"

When I was a college student, I was caught with half an ounce of marijuana in my dorm room. From what my neighbors told me, you could smell the blunt I was smoking all the way up the hallway and into the elevators. The dorm adviser came to my door with two police officers and told me that if I had anymore drugs in my room, I needed to turn them over to the police. I went into my room, grabbed the rest of the bag, which I had purchased just hours earlier, and handed it over to the police. They had a look of surprise on their faces and asked me why I just handed the bag to them, and I responded that the dorm adviser had told me to. They looked a bit uncomfortable, wrote me a ticket to appear in court, and left the premises. The whole dorm knew about it the next day. Most of the people I associated with laughed at me because I had done nothing to keep from getting caught. Some of my friends were angry. I did not understand why at the time, but I look back now and understand the reason for their frustration. In two, simple, but very charged words: White Privilege.

Studies have shown that white people are actually MORE LIKELY than Black or Hispanic people to participate in drug related activities, including possession, use and distribution. Yet, our jails are filled with Black and Hispanic men, victims of a so-called “War on Drugs” that is waged predominantly in minority communities. What my friends in college knew at the time, but what took me many years to realize was that my white skin is the reason that I was not handcuffed, arrested and placed in a cell that night. It was also the reason that a month later, when I was caught shoplifting, I was written up, again given a ticket to appear in court, and sent home. Not arrested, not handcuffed, not sent to spend the night in a cell. When it came time to appear in court, the marijuana possession charges were dismissed. I had done some research, informed the public defender assigned to me that the dorm adviser was acting as an agent of the state, and had told me to turn over any drugs in my possession without first informing me of my rights. I now believe that the charges were dismissed not because of the cogency of my argument but because of white privilege.

What Exactly Did Rick Sanchez Say Wrong?

So CNN's afternoon guy, Rick Sanchez, was fired yesterday. Supposedly he said some foul shit on a radio show, that was interpreted to be anti-Semitic. My initial reaction without giving a listen to, or having any knowledge of what was said was... Damn, if only CNN had moved this quickly on Lou Dobbs...

But hey, I realize that Lou Dobbs is an old white man so he can pretty much get away with any form of bigotry against any anybody. Hell, if Lou Dobbs sat in Helen Thomas' seat and said what she said about Israel and "them Jews", I'm pretty sure that unlike Helen Thomas, his old cantankerous ass would still have a job.

Uh-huh, yeah... watch ya back Roland Martin! Of course had it been Roland Martin who said the very same words or opinions expressed as Sanchez, the black community would be in an uproar. But after listening to what Sanchez said, maybe it explains why Roland doesn't have his own show with the network.

What, is Roland only good enough for TV One?

No but seriously, that's how I felt when I first heard the news. But now that I've heard the audio, I'm not quite sure that I can say that he did or said anything wrong. Nothing anti-Semitic at least. Now if he said something like "Jews owned the slave ships that brought black folks over from Africa," yeah, that would be so wrong.

But like I said, I don't see where anything he said was offensive, or derogatory enough to warrant him losing his job. OK, so yeah, maybe he was hatin' on Jon Stewart (who happens to be Jewish) just a tad for jabs taken at him in the name of comedy on The Daily Show.

Personally, I believe Sanchez has a right to feel the way he does as seen through a racial lens. As a minority, Sanchez has a right to feel some-type-of-way about how he's perceived. Which is really a trip coming from me because I take shots at just about anybody on this very site everyday.

But I'm black... and that means I can get a pass (I'm so laughing at that last line). I mean we had slavery, and they had the Holocaust. And no, not to compare and have a trivial debate about atrocities. But, as Sanchez said, I don't exactly see or hear of anybody Jewish having a hard time getting a job because of being Jewish.

Guess Who is Blacker than Barack Obama: Rod Blagojevich

It seems that the former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has taken a break from feeding his chia pet like hair to get down with the peeps.  Blagojevich was arrested last year after it was alleged that he engaged in corruption, which included the attempted sale of Barack Obama’s senate seat.  Clearly this a person for whom service and honour mean volumes.

 

Since then, Blagojevich has engaged in a campaign to garner respect and to paint himself as a sympathetic victim.  He has repeatedly asserted that all of his actions were for the benefit of the people.  In a recent statement to Esquire magazine, Mr. Blagojevich chose to invoke race to certify his persecution.

Stuff White People Don't Like: Shitty Customer Service

Unlike white people, black folks don't really care when they receive shitty customer service. Nine times out of ten black people are either providing said shitty service, or as a customer trying to get the hook up from said shitty service provider. White people on the other hand are guaranteed excellent customer service per the Constitution - no shit, it's in the Bill of Rights; or was that the 46th amendment?

At any rate, white folks are privileged enough to print their own money, so it's only natural that they expect top shelf service wherever they go. Being melanin afflicted as some of my brothers and sisters are we don't get the privilege to do something like this:


I'm guessing the Burger King "Have it your way" line didn't help matters any. Sure you might think that this lady was wrong to dial 911 for something as trivial as this. And yeah, you might think this wasn't an emergency which required the attention it received, but don't tell that to the lady who called. She's white and she's American, and by God she deserves good customer service. Hell I'm surprised she didn't call the FBI!

So what somebody may have died somewhere else because they weren't able to get through to a 911 operator - they probably didn't have health insurance anyway. Yeah, and just in case any of you feel the need to remind me about the black lady who called 911 to complain about McNuggets? Um, that was indeed an emergency - she was black and she ordered chicken, remember? But that didn't matter because she was eventually arrested. Obviously she wasn't able to print her own money.

Sarah Palin has a lot in common with black women? Did you know that?

I went over to The Grio and came across an article on Sarah Palin's similarities with black women. I just about wanted to throw up. How utterly dreadful!

I'd wager that, unlike me, most black women - being liberal Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents - have a pretty negative view of Palin. She's been called "white trash" by white elites, and even by some blacks. Yet ironically, Palin probably has just as much - and arguably more - in common with many black women than most female politicians. Palin is from a working-class family. She's not from the "right" part of the country. She doesn't possess the elite background that many folks have come to expect out of political leaders.


While she went through four different colleges and universities - eventually returning to the University of Idaho to finish - she did stick with it and get that degree. Like most black women, she has Christian faith. Palin tells you what she thinks. She has come up in a mostly male-dominated field. She is the breadwinner in her family, and she balances work and family commitments. She's even had to deal with a teen daughter who had an out-of-wedlock child and "baby daddy" drama, an issue that America's black moms disproportionately deal with regarding their daughters and suitors.

The author, Shamara Riley, could not have been any more condescending if she wanted to. Aside from completely and conveniently ignoring the "privilege" that enabled Palin to "rise" (if you would call it that) to various positions without merit, she compares us to Palin because of her daughter's baby daddy drama, and completely disregarding upper and middle class blacks who don't have any of the "issues" she talks about.

Then by her standards, we have a lot in common with other human pieces of sh*t. What a way to praise black women by comparing them to the walking mess that is Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin has never been a friend to African-Americans or blacks period. She was mean, condescending, and she instigated violence and hatred against the black man that was running against her by using her divisive talk. She belittled community organizers, used a teenage boy for her own ends, exploited her daughter and her family, and flaunted her stunning idiocy because the redneck trash that loved her wanted to screw her.

Sarah Palin is a simp, and she's the anti-black woman. Women like Sarah Palin will get picked for jobs and promotions over qualified black women, men, other minorities and even white men. She's proud of her lack of intellectuality, the same thing we cannot afford to allow in the black community. I take exception to the "distinction," and ask that Miss Riley examine her issues with her own people.

The Cipher: A conversation with a Revolutionary Black thinker

Today on the Intersection of Madness & Reality we have one of the most revered thinkers in the struggle for justice and equality (pictured above), Brother X-Squared; president of the North American Chapter of the Renewed Black Panther Party. I had the pleasure of coming to know X-Squared from the good folks at WARNN (We Are Respectable Negroes News Network) at the blog We Are Respectable Negroes. RiPPa: Welcome Brother X-Squared.

Brother X-Squared: It is a pleasure to finally have the opportunity to speak with you Brother Rippa. Your name is an inspiration. It signals strength, power, dignity, and honor. I know from your works--'cause I monitor the white man's Internets in an effort to sabotage the white man's efforts to use tricknology to manipulate the mental mindstates of the captive Black African, especially the bastion of evil Youtube where you can see all manner of black foolishness--that you too are a warrior in the struggle against white supremacy. Your name also has many levels of meaning Brother Rippa. Do you understand that your name also is a dualism? A polyhedron of knowledge that resonates throughout the multiverse?

RiPPa: Not sure if my name is Swahili for anything, or even what a polyhedron is all about, but I'd appreciate if you could expand on that for me my brother.

Brother X-Squared: Rippa is a name that makes sense. It embodies energy. It speaks truth. Obviously, you shed your slave name in order to rename yourself as a strong, righteous, black man. You see, Brother Rippa you are not one of these baby boy, little girl sissy men who was named by a an illegitimate, ghetto underclass, confused, cum dumpster implement of the white man's evil like that sad negress in that damned to hell movie Precious. Rippa exudes dignity and intelligence unlike those Shaquan's, Latrelle's, Tyrone's, and those other names common to the NBA—Nigger Ball Association--that signal from birth that you are destined for the white man's prison. Human fodder for his prison industrial complex.

RiPPa: Well that puts a lot of pressure on me now that I know this. Which is actually scary when I think of it Brother X. Next thing you know I'll be on the FBI watch-list like those brothers in Dearborn Michigan. Of course you heard what happened to them the other day didn't you?

Brother X-Squared: I heard of those pigs killing my fellow revolutionary. Do you know how many men died in the battle of the Somme in 1915?

RiPPa: Not exactly but I'm sure there were many.

Brother X-Squared: Almost 1 million of those white devils died. And that number is nothing compared to how many of our brothers have been killed by the white man's slave catchers and enforcers of his white supremacist racial state. That martyr won't be the last...no way, there will be many many more. You asked me about fear? About being afraid?

RiPPa: Yes I did; isn't it natural for a man like you, a Black man in America to ever be fearful? Surely you must be, right?

Brother X-Squared: You clearly don't know who I am Brother Rippa I am disappointed. I have never shown fear. The only being I fear is the almighty Black God, the creator of the universe. Death is a comfort to me Brother Rippa. You see, I am a modern day samurai. I am their heir in action. The samurai were the greatest warriors the world has ever seen because they welcomed death, they went into battle as dead men looking to earn back their lives. Just like those strong Nubian warriors the Jem'hadar in those white space movies Star Trek, victory is life for all true revolutionaries. I welcome battle with the white man and his death squads. But, I know they won't come for me because I am too strong, too black, and too powerful. They understand that Brother X-Squared is too educated to fall for their nonsense and trickery. I use their own Constitution and Bill of Rights against them. I keep a copy of it in my pocket as a reminder of their wickedness. Those sacred documents have also given the Black man a tool to use against those white tricksters and forked tongue devils. I slay him--just like you do Brother Rippa--with his own laws and principles.

Every now and then readers of this blog put me hip to some of the stuff that's going on in the country as it involves race matters. I don't always get the opportunity as I should to address them all as I get them, but this one I couldn't resist. Apparently, there's an email circulating which justifies why Sonia Sotomayor should not be a Supreme Court judge. You may wonder why I've spent time on the subject of her nomination and the backlash. I do so because it is my belief that with more people of color at that level of power, certain inequalities which affect us all and not just people of color will be realized. Any injustice faced by people of color affects us all as a society, and I think it's time that this is realized mainly by our "privileged" brothers and sisters who are non-minorities.

• White men are objective. Women and people of color are inherently biased, making all their opinions suspect. This should automatically disqualify them from serving on the bench. White men look out for everyone and aren’t just interested in taking care of their own. Frankly, people of color are secretly “out to get” white men and would use whatever power they have to settle a score.

• White people are color-blind and can transcend race. Today’s racists and sexists are actually people of color and women who cling to their identity politics just for their own gain. Judge Sonia Sotomayor thinks that race shapes one’s experiences and perspectives and that diversity somehow makes things better. Her Puerto Rican roots must be coloring her views for she clearly has little understanding of America or its citizens. No wonder Newt Gingrich authoritatively labels her a “Latina woman racist.” White American-born straight men have secure identities and don’t need identity politics.

Indeed, whites don’t even see race because they don’t really have a race. They’re just part of the human race. They prefer to blend in without calling attention to themselves. And they know that if we’d all just ignore race, then racism would disappear. That’s why Chief Justice John Roberts, when striking down a voluntary school integration plan, nobly asserted, “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.” In other words, race conscious remedies to address racial inequalities are, by definition, racist. Simple logic. It makes you wonder how the authors of the Brown v. Board of Education decision could have been so blatantly discriminatory.

• White men are more qualified. They consistently score better on standardized tests. That’s why they get into elite schools and high-paying jobs, fair and square, without any affirmative action. If white men excel, it’s only because meritocracy works. Those who make the rules and play by them deserve to succeed.

• White men have the right judicial temperament. The last thing our highest court needs is angry people of color, hysterical women, or both. White men have well-honed skills for staying cool and collected. And they’re less likely to be “activist” judges. In fact, we’d be better off with a strict interpretation of our original constitution--before it got all mucked up with amendments that gave too many people rights they didn’t even earn or deserve, like the right to vote. Look where that’s gotten us.

• White men are the new minority. White men are endangered, having to fend off reverse racism at every turn. With a Black president, who knows what could happen to the Supreme Court and every other sacred institution? Under our unwritten quota system, every vacancy sets off a bean-counting frenzy. Now, anyone and their cousin with dark skin or limited testosterone is instantly qualified for a seat on the Supreme Court. That’s why this nomination fight is the new ground zero of Pat Buchanan’s prophetic “culture war.” And it may well become the frontline of the war on terror. For it’s not just the survival of white men at stake, but the sanctity of our entire social order.

I don't know about you, but I didn't know that White men were on the endangered species list before I read that above email. Seriously, I had no friggin idea, and now I feel bad about it. This is bad people; we can't just have "Red-Blooded God-fearing Americans" be subject to such oppression and be relegated to 2nd class citizens in this country of ours. I mean seriously, what would Adolph Hitler say if this were allowed to happen? White men have fought hard for this country; they've toiled tirelessly on cotton fields after being brought to this new land on the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Nina from Europe. You may not know this, but the conditions on those ships were not anything like the Queen Victoria or the Titanic. Yes, many of them succumbed to sea sickness, and the occasional scurvy; and in spite of that they survived.

For them to be in danger as they are today is a grave danger to humanity as we know it. Yes, and this is why we must take up their cause. Yes, as a people we must do all we can to advance the cause of the White man; help them register to vote; give them welfare; create anti-discrimination laws; dammit do something! Please people, it's important that you join me in this effort. If you don't, they may just end up in cages in the zoo. Or even worse, our Prison Industrial Complex. So please, join me in this effort. Forget Martin Luther King Jr. and all that dream talk. I mean hell, ask yourself: what would Clarence Thomas do?

I WISH I WAS WHITE LIKE OBAMA

Before I get into this blog, lemme just say for the last time this week: I'M SO EXCITED THAT MY PRESIDENT IS HALF WHITE! Ok, whew, I feel alot better now just getting that out. What? You didn't notice that Barack Obama is half white? Really? Oh you obviously have been caught up in all the false media hype about him being Black. You silly people with all your talk of history crap.

Oh yeah, the blog...

Ok so for the last few days I've been running into a rash of discussions on race on this site and quite a few others. It would appear that alot of our White brothers and sisters are a little disturbed by the events of January 20th concerning President Obama. Now I don't know if their thoughts represent a minority of White people, but it would seem that some of them are having a problem with all this racial stuff, racial talk, and history. I mean, all of a sudden I'm hearing talk about is being even since we have a Black president; stuff like no more excuses for Black people; racism is dead; we're a new country now; yadda yadda yadda. I mean suddenly in the age of Obama, White folks are experts on racism.

As much as I would love to go into disproving them with statistics and data, instead I'll go another route. You see, the problem is simple: WHITE PRIVILEGE. Yup, White privilege affords you the ability to say stuff like that. I mean, if you were not the majority, and have been subjected to years of documented overt as well as subtle racism (just the thought of racism being subtle is kinda funny almost like racism lite) I seriously doubt you'd think that way. Now before moving along, its important to understand that White Privilege has nothing to do with wealth and riches, or having it easy in life. No it doesn't because if that were the case, there would be no "You Might Be A Redneck" jokes.

You see, White privilege has to do with the tenets of White Supremacy. Sure, you as a white person may not wake up in the morning intent on spraying water hoses at Black people or accusing unsuspecting middle eastern airline passengers of being terrorists. But trust me, just like we as Black people (and other minorities) have been indoctrinated and conditioned to hate ourselves? You White people have had just the opposite. You see, while treating other people like shit, you because of the color of your skin have subconsciously developed a sense of entitlement which has been ingrained into our American cultural experience.

Entitlement to what? I don't know, but if you can find a living Native American with a tear running down his cheek maybe you'll understand. Oh and just in case you do find Sitting Bull, its important to understand that he's not crying because you litter and destroy our ecology. Bottom line: throughout the years you guys have gotten to love yourselves a lil bit too much to the point where you don't even notice what's going on around you because, well...its your privilege.

Ok, so I know what you're thinking...

Fuckin RiPPa is a racist son of a bitch!

I understand, White Privilege will cause you to think like that. No seriously, it does.

It will have you thinking that Black people are racist because they think their race is the master race of the world. Yup, and in thinking that, fear sets in and you seek to protect what's yours from those racist Black people like me who have everything because they pretty much run everything in this country.

But anyway, since I'm Black and obviously you think I'm racist or biased and full of shit. Allow me to introduce you to a man who is able to break this all down to bring some understanding. His name is Tim Wise, and yes he's White. I figured the only way you may be able to understand any of this is if you hear it from a White guy. In all seriousness, I understand and realize that this isn't something that some of you are ready or maybe even capable of dealing with. But its important that if we're in a "post racial" society and all, we should at least be able to have an honest discussion on this.
